How do I know if it's the coil or the spark plug?
Swap the suspected coil with one from a cylinder that isn't misfiring — if the misfire follows the coil to the new cylinder, the coil is bad. If it stays on the same cylinder, check the plug next. A code reader that shows which cylinder is misfiring (P0301, P0302, etc.) tells you exactly where to start.
Can I replace just one coil, or do I need the whole set?
If only one cylinder is misfiring and the others have similar mileage, replacing just that coil is common practice. If your coils are all original and high-mileage, replacing the full set at once avoids doing this job again in a few months when the next one fails.
Do iridium spark plugs actually make a difference?
Yes — the iridium center electrode holds its gap and sparks consistently far longer than standard copper plugs, which usually means tens of thousands more miles before you need to touch them again, for a modest price premium.
Will a bad coil or plug damage anything else if I keep driving?
A sustained, ignored misfire can dump unburned fuel into the catalytic converter and overheat it — turning a cheap coil/plug fix into an expensive converter replacement. If the Check Engine light is flashing (not just on solid), get it looked at promptly.
